Value of Swiss Laboratory Medicine

Michael Schlander discussed the ´Value of Laboratory Medicine in Switzerland´ at the Swiss Day of Laboratory Medicine [Tag der Labormedizin] in Bern, Switzerland, on Friday, November 03, 2023.

Beyond offering an overview of the economic impact of laboratory medicine in the context of Swiss health care, he addressed the methodology used to assess the value of laboratory testing. The presentation focused not only on the cost effectiveness of a wide range of laboratory tests (i.e., their “static efficiency”, using illustrative examples and pointing to the outcomes of Health Technology Assessments). He also emphasized the important role of laboratory medicine in research and development, “precision medicine”, and innovation during complete technology life cycles (“i.e., dynamic efficiency”).
